Now that summer is in full swing in many parts of the world, I thought it would be a good time to write about something I’ve felt for years whenever I go away for a few days. Trips might be the only chance we get to view our lives from a distance. Let me explain.
In the midst of our daily responsibilities, it’s almost impossible to gain distance and evaluate what’s working and what could be improved in our lives and whether our current work is leading us in the right direction. We’re so close to everything that the only way is forward: doing one more task, having one more meeting, completing one more daily chore, day after day, week after week, for months on end.
On the other hand, when we physically go somewhere else, we can detach from everything in our daily lives. We can start looking at our lives as if they’re someone else’s, and only then can we see where our path is taking us, how our decisions have led us here.
To me, time away is not only time to rest, but also time to think and plan for the next few months.
The most impactful decisions I’ve made have all happened while I was away, and now that I’m back, well, it’s time to work.
